CHAPTER SUMMARY:

The university developed from an agricultural college in the 1850s into a research-driven flagship institution today. It opened with two buildings and now contains more than 100. Maryland has evolved from an inaugural class size of 34 to more than 35,000 combined undergraduate and graduate students.

Understanding the history of an institution is critical to knowing why things exist today. This chapter describes Maryland’s evolution including its development, plus the history of its landmarks such as McKeldin Mall.
